Creative Volume Is the New Targeting

The old Meta Ads skill was audience construction: layered interests, lookalikes, exclusion logic, precisely defined segments. Privacy changes and platform automation have steadily removed those controls. Broad targeting plus algorithmic delivery now outperforms manual segmentation in most accounts.

That has not made targeting irrelevant. It has moved it into the creative.

How the Algorithm Reads Creative

When you run a broad campaign, the delivery system finds the audience by observing who responds to each ad. A video that opens with a shot of a workshop bench will find people who care about craft. One that opens on a price comparison will find bargain hunters. The creative is the targeting instruction, expressed in a language the algorithm reads through behaviour rather than settings.

This means the number of distinct angles you can put into an account determines how much of the addressable market it can reach.

Volume, But Structured

Volume alone is waste. The useful version is systematic: a defined set of variables — hook, format, proof type, offer framing, audience persona — combined deliberately so that when something wins you can identify which variable drove it.

Randomly producing fifty ads teaches you nothing. Producing fifty ads across a structured matrix teaches you what your market responds to, and that knowledge transfers to landing pages, email and sales conversations.

Production Has to Get Cheaper

This model collapses if each asset requires a full production cycle. The teams executing it well have restructured production: modular footage libraries, templated edits, creator-sourced raw material, generative tooling for variation, and a clear separation between expensive hero assets and cheap iterative ones.

The goal is not to make every ad polished. It is to make testing an angle cheap enough that being wrong doesn't hurt.

Fatigue Is Faster Than It Used to Be

Winning creative decays. Frequency climbs, response drops, and the account quietly gets more expensive. A steady pipeline of new angles is maintenance, not growth work — without it, performance erodes even when nothing appears to have changed.

What to Measure

Track cost per acquisition at the concept level, not just the ad level. Several executions of the same underlying idea should be evaluated together, because that is the unit you will scale or retire.

The accounts winning now are not the ones with the cleverest audience setup. They are the ones with a production system behind them.
